Snow glass apples colleen doran6/27/2023 ![]() I would argue many of the ingredients are right there in the fairy tale. You might wonder how Neil Gaiman and I would independently come up with the idea of a vampire Snow White. She’ll create blood-laced poison apples for her stepdaughter. ![]() The queen sets a plan in motion to save her land and the fair from Snow White. When people enter the woods, she attacks and kills them. Looking in her scrying mirror, the queen realizes that Snow White is still alive. The years pass, but fewer and fewer people cross the woods to visit the spring fair. She sees Snow White for the danger she is, orders her heart cut out and her body taken to the woods. Over time, the king fades and dies, which is how the young woman becomes queen. There, she discovers his vampire daughter, who mostly keeps to herself. The king marries the young woman and brings her home. We learn that the former king went to the woods and fell in love with a beautiful young woman after his wife had died. ![]() In this case, the fairy tale is told from the point of view of Snow White’s stepmother, the queen. Of course, I picked up the book right away. Not only that, it looked like Snow White was portrayed as a vampire. Reading the back and then browsing the interior, I soon discovered this was also a retelling of Snow White. ![]() On a recent trip to a bookstore, I found the 2019 graphic novel Snow, Glass, Apples written by Neil Gaiman with art by Colleen Doran. ![]()

Either Josie is going insane or a nightmare straight out of ancient myth is gunning for her.īut it might be the unlikely attraction simmering between her and the golden-eyed, secret-keeping Seth that may prove to be the most dangerous thing of all.īecause history has once again been flipped to repeat. Josie has no idea what this crazy hot guy’s deal might be, but it’s a good bet that his arrival means the new life she started after leaving home is about to be thrown into an Olympian-sized blender turned up to puree. ![]() He’s got to play protector while keeping his hands and fingers off, and for someone who really has a problem with restraint, this new assignment might be the most challenging yet. ![]() But now Apollo has something else in mind for Seth. And so far, the jobs they’ve given him have been violent and bloody–which is kind of all right with him. It’s been a year since Seth made the deal with the gods that pledged his life to them. ![]() The Fates are cackling their bony asses off… ![]()

Trespasses novel6/26/2023 ![]() ![]() I am not a crier, but by the final pages of Trespasses, I was in tears. A rising sense of tension throughout comes to a shocking head. Then the father of a student is savagely beaten, setting in motion a chain reaction that will threaten everything, and everyone, Cushla most wants to protect.Īs tender as it is unflinching, Trespasses is a heart-pounding, heart-rending drama of thwarted love and irreconcilable loyalties, in a place what you come from seems to count more than what you do, or whom you cherish. Against her better judgment – Michael is not only Protestant but older, and married – Cushla lets herself get drawn in by him and his sophisticated world, and an affair ignites. There she meets Michael Agnew, a barrister who’s made a name for himself defending IRA members. By day she teaches at a parochial school at night she fills in at her family’s pub. Set in Northern Ireland during the Troubles, a shattering novel about a young woman caught between allegiance to community and a dangerous passion.Īmid daily reports of violence, Cushla lives a quiet life with her mother in a small town near Belfast. “TRESPASSES vaults Kennedy into the ranks of such contemporary masters as McCann, Claire Keegan, Colin Barrett, and fellow Sligo resident, Kevin Barry. “Brilliant, beautiful, heartbreaking.”-J.Courtney Sullivan, New York Times Book Review SHORTLISTED FOR THE WOMEN'S PRIZE FOR FICTION NAMED A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR BY THE WASHINGTON POST ![]()

Troglodytes by Ed Lynskey6/26/2023 ![]() ![]() Despite a somewhat predictable resolution, the first-rate writing will leave readers eager to see more of Johnson.”– Publishers Weekly ![]() When the pair pursue the mystery with the local sheriff, a cascade of violence overwhelms the quiet community-murders that may be connected with a shadowy local racist cult known as the Blue Cheer. Johnson has sought to still the memories of a deadly encounter with the Ku Klux Klan by retreating to the Appalachian town of Scarab, where people-and friends-are few and far between. “Set in the remote mountains of West Virginia, this gritty contemporary detective novel, Lynskey’s second to feature former PI Frank Johnson (after 2006’s The Dirt-Brown Derby), will remind many of such masters of hard-boiled prose as Loren Estleman. ![]() “A worthy heir to some of the pulp’s best ‘eyes’.” “A lovely & gritty, contemporary noir story.” “Stylistically ambitious w/nice narrative touches & observations.” ![]()

Csikszentmihalyi creativity6/25/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The good news is that Csikszentmihalyi has a number of different solutions for us to try, in whole or in part.įirst, we can cultivate curiosity and pursue our interests. Not knowing what to do with the energy we have (purpose deficit) Too many distractions (trouble channeling energy) Too many demands on our mental energy (exhaustion) Csikszentmihalyi identifies four main obstacles to expressing and exploring our personal creativity: But, even if we know that enhancing our personal creativity might make us enjoy life somewhat more, many things can get in the way of us doing something about it. Who wouldn’t want to be happier? Surely most people would like a little more levity in their lives. If there is such a thing as a “secret to happiness,” then enhanced personal creativity is an important part of it. Similarly, to his more eudemonic conclusions about flow, the end pursued in being more creative is a life full of optimal experiences. Starting with the why, he writes that while personal creativity may not lead us to fame or fortune, it may make everyday life more vivid, enjoyable, and rewarding-it banishes boredom and helps us find the promise of fresh discovery in every moment. In the final chapter of his book on Creativity, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi pulls together the results of his intensive study of the lives of Creative People to distill some lessons on how and why we might increase our own personal creativity. ![]()

Yoke jessamyn6/25/2023 ![]() Through that, we can heal tremendous pain in our society. “What yoga can offer us is the structure, the clarity, the patience, and the openness to acceptance. The self-described Black, fat, queer yoga instructor tackles topics ranging from her weight, white supremacy, cultural appropriation and Blackness. To heal as a society, Stanley says folks must learn to accept that every single human being is crucial, and it’s not about erasing the darkness or bad things, it’s about balance. Author Jessamyn Stanley‘s new book Yoke is a series of honest, challenging, humorous and poignant essays about her life mostly seen through the lens of her yoga practice. It’s about really engaging with the things that feel most painful.” So much of yoga is about that unveiling, the peeling back, the looking under the rug. The last 18 months have exposed the country’s systemic violence and discrimination, and Stanley has noticed that people are done with the bullshit. “The yoking that happens in everyday life, the yoking that has nothing to do with a yoga mat or postures or moving the body at all is the most profound yoga, and it’s really the yoga that’s being asked of me for sure right now.” She suggests that’s what is being asked of all of us. In Yoke, Stanley explores how yoga can help with self-love, body positivity, sexuality, and more. That separation isn’t limited to wellness. Yogi Jessamyn Stanley Says Namaste to the Self ![]() |
